How Long Does New Concrete Take to Cure?

New concrete looks set within hours, but it's still gaining strength for weeks. Here's the realistic timeline — and why a Western Sydney heatwave changes how we pour and cure.

The rough timeline

We'll give you specific times for your job, because mix, thickness and weather all shift it. As a rule of thumb, keep vehicles off a new driveway for about a week.

Why our summers matter

Concrete doesn't “dry” — it cures through a chemical reaction that needs moisture. In a 40°C Western Sydney summer the surface can dry too fast, which weakens it and causes surface cracking. That's why we plan pours around the heat: early starts, sometimes evaporation retarders, and proper curing (keeping the slab damp or covered) for the first few days. Pouring a slab in the afternoon sun and walking away is how you get a crazed, dusty surface.

How to look after a fresh slab

If we ask you to keep it watered or leave the curing cover on, it genuinely matters for the final strength. Keep cars, trailers and skip bins off until we say it's right, and don't let sprinklers or downpipes blast the fresh edge. A week of patience protects a driveway that'll last 30 years.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I drive on a new concrete driveway?

Usually about 7 days for a car, and up to 28 days before heavy vehicles or trailers. We'll confirm the exact time for your slab.

Can it rain on fresh concrete?

Light rain after it's set can actually help curing, but heavy rain on a just-poured surface can damage the finish. We time pours around the forecast.

Why is my old concrete dusty or flaky on top?

That's often a sign it was poured in heat and dried too fast, or wasn't cured. A resurface can restore the surface — we can assess it at a quote.
